We had a tour guide, Douglas (great sense of humor and interesting/informative as well), who took us from the hotel to the gorge. He stopped along the way to show us a marble plant- very fascinating. He explained to us how to tell the difference between the ubiquitous male and female marble lions that appear on many bridges, roads, etc...... The female lion keeps the baby lion safe under her paw.
Many of the mountains in Taroko National Park are made of marble! This means that marble is relatively inexpensive and easily accessible- so you see marble everywhere- even sidewalks are made of marble in this part of Taiwan!
These pictures show Douglas, a female marrble guardian lion, then several of the marble factory, and one of the marble sidewalks.
