Our first walking trip into Taroko National Park was beautiful and interesting. The natural beauty was incredible (some pictures follow- though they can't really convey the full extent of the height of the mountains nor the depth of the gorges nor the size of the enormous marble rocks). One of my favorite parts of the first trail we walked was our visit with an aboriginal family. An aborigninal tribe lived in these mountains long before the area was proclaimed a national park; consequently, aboriginal families are 'allowed' to continue living in the national park in their traditional homes, raising their traditional animals and crops. As we were walking through the mountains, we occasionally heard a rooster crowing :) When we got to the aborigani family's home which was just off the main walking trail, we finally realized why we heard roosters in the mountains! A young boy came out of his home to greet us and show us around his home. He showed us the family chickens, their storage area, outdoor bathroom, plants (birdsnest ferns in particular). He was so pleased to show us around and to have his picture taken! Pictures follow.
